Loss
of weight in relation to food given
can be for many reasons, but in healthy and regularly wormed
horses with no problems it is mainly due to dehydration of the
gut.
The
only way the body can hydrate is through the gastro-intestinal system,
so when the horse becomes dehydrated the gut is one of the first systems
to come under pressure.
Once
dehydration of the gut has occurred the passage of nutrients from the
gut to the rest of the body becomes impaired resulting in weight loss
and in extreme cases causes colic.
